About Ceol Aneas

Held each year in Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand, the workshops are modelled on the Irish Summer Schools held in Miltown Malbay, Tubbercurry and Drumshambo. The workshops offer a series of master class and performance opportunities to attendees to enhance their own music practice as well as the cultural and artistic landscape of New Zealand with its strong Irish links.

Commencing in 2000 as a master class for flute players organised by the Celtic Flute School of New Zealand, the workshops evolved so that by 2003 classes had been added for fiddle, concertina and bouzouki. In 2004, we added more classes so that we offered flute, fiddle, uilleann pipes, whistle and accompaniment workshops primarily for guitarists and bouzouki players. At that time, we changed the name of the event to Ceol Aneas which is Gaelic for Music from the South. In case you're not sure, it's pronounced something like 'kee-ole ann-ass'.

Mission

To produce a school of traditional Irish music providing tuition in a wide range of traditional instruments featuring inspirational musicians on an annual basis each Queen's Birthday weekend.

Management

The Celtic Flute School of New Zealand Inc. known as Ceol Aneas, is managed by a committee elected at the Annual General Meeting held during the weekend of the school.  Students in Irish Traditional Music are the major stakeholders of the school. The committee, who are usually but not necessarily musicians themselves,  give their time and organisationl skills to the running of the school voluntarily and without renumeration. The school is operated on a strict non-for-profit basis and all funds generated are returned to the operations of the school.   This means that committee members pay a fee to attend the classes in the same way as all students who attend tuition workshops.
